Monterey did lose one of my favorite apps (TotalSpaces) which I am still groaning over every day I use my mac.but I guess I will have to move on from that too because next year Catalina will stop getting security updates also. Those apps wont run in Catalina, so its best to find them now. Catalina lost 32bit apps, and I did lose a couple apps, though it turned out that life went on and I adapted. That is probably the biggest reason i tend to avoid upgrading until years later.because I don't want to give up software I am using. Select the latest macOS option and install that.
At that point you should be offered two options. I did lose some software with Catalina and again with Monterey due to non-compatibility. With toolbar buttons to launch, reveal, or move the selected file to the Trash, Go64 makes the process easy. Quit Disk Utility and go to Install macOS. Sooner or later you'll want to get to the latest version, i feel BigSur was a good one to skip personally.

I have recently moved to Monterey and I am liking it also. I will fight this with the NYS Attorney General and Better Business Bureau if I am stuck not being able to Use my 2018 CC with Mac OS Catalina, unless I get. Please consider making a donation to help support development.
Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Those apps won't run in Catalina, so it's best to find them now. I feel like Apple usually breaks more stuff then they add, nearly every version.some versions are worse then others. I am almost universally a late adopter of MacOS versions.
